Getting Actionable Advice from Top Amazon Experts

by Chris McCabe | May 15, 2018

I really enjoyed co-hosting the Seller Velocity Conference recently with Bernie Thompson of Plugable in New York City. I met new sellers and saw familiar faces among the crowd gathered to listen to our All-Star line-up of Amazon experts. Each speaker represented tremendous knowledge around their chosen topic, from the legal and policy enforcement challenges that sellers face to account logistics and optimization goals that sellers shoot for.

Great talks from our Amazon Experts

I spoke about taking your account protection needs to the next level by developing standard operating procedures to regularly review your account, building stronger relationships with both Category and Marketplace Growth team managers. Setting up regular account reviews helps to show Amazon that you’re proactively identifying potential problems and honing your correspondence with performance and policy teams. Reduced friction during the appeals process means money, and the sales you miss while you go in circles comes in handy later on when you want to buy more inventory for peak periods!

Bernie Thompson

showed sellers how to build your engagement with each customer and charted the growth for every successful seller from your first big product launch to the next several after that. Bernie is invited to contribute and give feedback quite often when Amazon rolls out new seller initiatives, so he’s clearly doing something right in Amazonland!

Rick Cesari

nailed down how you can use video to keep Amazon buyer eyeballs focused on your brand long enough to generate meaningful sales increases, and how you can use video to attract new demographics to your products. If you’re not using video to build your brand, you should be.

Our legal experts

gave actionable legal advice on how to keep potential threats at bay, whether they are resellers of other brands, or protecting their own brand. How do you evaluate a legal problem the right way? Are patent infringement claims the new avenue of attack against both kinds of sellers?

Several Seller Velocity speakers covered the best ways to grow accounts while defending them against such threats, and of course, how to keep Amazon happy at the same time. This is what the Seller Velocity Conference was all about, and what we’ll include for future events.

Jamin Arvig

covered logistics and order fulfillment solutions, and how they vary from one type of seller account to the next. Jamin is heading to IRCE next month in Chicago if you want to hear more about his work at AICommerce.

What Our Speakers had to say about the Seller Velocity Conference

What did my co-host Bernie say when I asked him, “Well, Bernie, how did it go for you?”

This Seller Velocity Conference was vibrant, lively. Especially when Paul Rafelson talked through the catch-22 of state tax, and how the Online Merchant’s Guild is helping. Who would have thought that a tax talk would have people hopping up and out of their chairs!

8 figure Amazon seller, Plugable and Efficient Era

I asked speaker Casey Vaughn, Attorney at Law, what did she think of her experience that night? She said,
The Seller Velocity conference was excellent. The chance to speak with both subject matter experts and established Amazon sellers was really valuable to me. I most enjoyed getting to speak to advanced Amazon sellers from all different types of businesses: private label brand owners, dropshippers, wholesale account managers. Seeing how different companies view the opportunities and risks on Amazon helps me as a lawyer better tailor my advice and the services I provide to my clients.

I second that. I think it does make a difference to be able to meet with a seller in -person to discuss the particulars of their situation. I found that to be the case in the 1:1 consults I did during the conference, and also during the networking session before the talks began.

Sponsors Urtasker and NAS Momentum Insurance provided solid information on how their services help sellers cope with the heavy -duty requirements of an Amazon business.

Every Amazon sellers knows the significant attention Amazon account demands, and you don’t want your staff stretched to the breaking point, where mistakes might happen. Urtasker understands that experienced virtual support has become a vital piece to the puzzle to the operations of many a seller.

Suspension insurance is a core topic at any conference nowadays for a good reason, Amazon sellers need to prepare for that rainy day when the performance or policy teams take the worst action possible on an account. Has each seller considered the financial ramifications of a suspension? We were fortunate to have Momentum sponsor us and answering questions on insurance policies, the ultimate safety net.

What did attendees have to say?

I asked seller Rob Wray of Whitebox his general impressions of the conference after it was over.

Amazon and ecommerce in general is changing at a breakneck pace, so the conference was a great way to keep up with changes. It was a good way to connect with other large merchants, former amazon employees, and other experts. It is a requirement for any fast growth ecommerce business to have these resources or have a partner that has access to these resources.
Robert Wray

CEO, Whitebox

Networking time centered around each seller’s need to talk to larger sellers about growth, best practices around listing creation and optimization, alongside an abiding need to maintain the track record of success on each account without cutting any corners! Risk assessments must go hand and hand with any chart to grows revenue, and in my mind, each attendee of Seller Velocity who spoke with me and other speaks understood this implicitly. We’re not here to tell you what you already know, after all, we’re here to encourage sellers to manage growth responsibly and effectively.

Another voice from Seller Velocity, Oscar Vela, an attendee from Texas,

The conference was highly informative with top tier merchants and service providers. A definite must-attend for advanced sellers.

We also offered content from experts who were not in attendance in New York, of course. Did you see my chat with Ari Levy of CNBC fame, about what it’s like to cover Amazon every day? No? Well, here it is. Not everyone gets a view into the life of an Amazon beat reporter, but you do!
Also, Bernie’s video conversation with Attorney Amy Hsiao is here below. They covered crucial questions that face sellers around international law and Amazon, and how to approach solutions.
I’m always hungry for suggestions on what problems concern sellers the most, and for speaker recommendations for the next conference down the road. Share these ideas with me! I will make sure they come to fruition and wind up in our next Amazon merchant conference. Stay tuned!
